TEDxRegina Back in Regina for 2013, Announces Four Speakers

REGINA, SK – May 9, 2013 – TEDxRegina returns to Regina for the second consecutive year, slated for Tuesday, June 4 at the University of Regina. The event will feature a number of speakers from across Saskatchewan who will share unique stories, experiences and ideas in the spirit of TED Talks.

TEDxRegina is a local, independently organized TEDx event created to bring area residents together with live speakers to share ideas, network and discuss what they’re really passionate about.

“The TEDxRegina 2013 theme is ‘Connect to Possibility,’ so we’re trying to create an event that invites a diversity of speakers and attendees,” explains Jeff Vall, Co-Chair for TEDxRegina. “We’re hoping as speakers share their passion and expertise, it will lead attendees to react and discuss these ideas beyond the event itself – connecting these ideas with people in and around Regina.”

TEDxRegina is pleased to announce its first four speakers for 2013, with more to be announced very soon:

* June Zimmer, Ph.D. – A nationally recognized health educator and researcher focused on improving the health of women and young girls across Canada.

* Dave Mitchell – An experienced freelance editor, researcher and writer whose work has appeared in a number of politically-charged publications.

* Corinne Miller – A Regina high school principal (at Thom but moving to Balfour in the fall) committed to empowering students and teachers to personalize their learning.

* Ryan Deschamps – An award-winning Halifax librarian turned social media expert currently studying the role of social media on public policy at the JSGS.

“We’re very excited about our lineup of speakers for this year,” says Vall. “Last year was our first time hosting a TEDx event in Regina and it was a great success. This year promises to be bigger and better.”

Jeff and Nevin attend TEDActive 2013

Just over a month ago, Jeff and I had the privilege of attending TEDActive 2013 in Palm Springs, California. TEDActive is a simulcast presentation of the main TED event being delivered at the same time (February 25 - March 1) in Long Beach, California.

TEDActive had 700 attendees and was made up of passionate TED fans and many TEDx organizers. In addition to TEDActive, we also went to a pre-conference workshop for TEDx organizers.

TEDActive and the workshop were profound experiences. We saw some amazing speakers, but my biggest takeaway was the collective passion and enthusiasm of the audience itself. The content becomes secondary to the conversations and information exchanged between participants throughout the event.

Jeff and I were pleased to see that much of the work done to deliver the first TEDxRegina event last year, however intuitive, was well-aligned with the style and effort put in by other TEDx organizers and TED themselves. The focus and tone of our event, the way we developed speakers and the overall experience of TEDxRegina 2012 were all affirmed – we’re on the right track. We returned excited to share our new understanding of TED with our team and with TEDxRegina 2013 participants.

Some other key takeaways:

- TEDxRegina should enable participants to build and strengthen their own networks. We should focus equally on a) the quality of audience interaction and b) the production of the talks themselves.

- Sponsorship at TEDActive (and TED itself) is highly interactive and hands-on: sponsors offered branded stations to encourage participation and self-expression – sort of like “Science Centre exhibits for adults.” There’s an exciting opportunity to partner with our sponsors to craft a presence for them that is both meaningful for their brand and enhances the audience experience.

- With a global TED following, there are fans in Regina that are ready and able to extend TED-style interactions and relationships beyond just a day’s event. Pre-event connections and post-event follow-up are areas for us to improve and build a TED dialogue that lasts in Regina throughout the year.

TEDActive was very rewarding for both of us. After meeting so many amazing, focused, purpose-driven people, we both come back asking some pretty big, fundamental questions about how we can create value and serve our community. Being at TEDActive challenged each of us to redefine the contribution we expect from ourselves.

We’re excited to again bring together the TED community in Regina and deliver another round of passionate, engaging speakers and enjoy some stimulating discussion. Our search for ideas worth spreading and voices that should be on stage begins now.

As a visitor to TEDxRegina.com, we know you’re thinking about how TEDxRegina can excite and engage our community. If you know of potential TEDxRegina topics or speakers, would you let us know? If you have contact information or links that can help us pursue a speaker, all the better, but any and all suggestions or leads are gratefully accepted. Any suggestions can be shared back to Nevin and Jeff at hello@tedxregina.com or @tedxregina.

Potential speakers will be invited to email a summary of what they would like to speak about. As we move into 2013, we’ll work with speakers to explore their talks and confirm those that will speak at TEDxRegina 2013.

What kind of speakers are you looking for?

We want to cast as wide a net as possible without excluding anyone. A TEDx series is designed to be multi-disciplinary and broad. What gets shared at TEDxRegina will be a small cross-section of the interests and passions that reside in and around Regina. It won’t be limited to an industry or a specific field. We are looking for a variety of perspectives and ideas on any subject. TEDxRegina 2013 doesn’t have a theme, at least not yet, but we’re open to suggestions.

In short, we’re looking for passionate people that have ideas worth spreading. TEDxRegina gives us the opportunity to uncover some of the stories and speakers that might otherwise go unnoticed. We don’t necessarily want polished speakers or individuals with a resume of speaking experiences. For some of our speakers, it may be their first time on stage.

We hope you will get involved in this process and help us find some speakers in Regina that would deliver a great TED talk. Tell your friends that TEDxRegina is happening in the Spring of 2013 and watch the blog for updates!

We’re pleased to share that TEDxRegina is coming back for 2013! We received great feedback from our survey following our spring 2012 session. We’re excited to come back bigger and better for another year.

We have some brilliant, committed sponsors that have already told us they want to be a part of round 2 and planners that are now battle-tested and going in with… hopefully… a little more wisdom.

TEDxRegina Happened!

Thanks to everyone who attended TEDxRegina and for making our first event a huge success! We were blown away by our speakers who offered us incredible ideas and challenged us to think differently. Equally impressive was our audience who came prepared to listen and discuss these ideas and actively share them with the larger community.

Thanks to our volunteers who were a huge help in making this event run flawlessly. A special thanks to all of our sponsors who understand the mission of TED and support community initiatives like this one. For those who weren't able to be at TEDxRegina this year, we will have videos and pictures posted on the website soon! We wish we could have accommodated everyone who wanted to be part of TEDxRegina. If all goes to plan, we'll be able to have a bigger event next year so that we can accommodate all the passionate TED fans in Regina who want to be part of this great experience.

Thanks again for all the amazing enthusiasm and support Regina has shown for a TEDx event. With more applicants than we could accommodate, we took all our passionate, engaged applicants and conducted a random selection. Please check the address you applied with to see if you have an email inviting you to register.

We have set a deadline for invitees to register by next Friday, May 4th. If we have some unfilled seats at that time, we may be able to invite a few more. We really do wish we could invite you all.

If you got the invite, we hope you're excited... and feeling a responsiblity to represent your fellow TED fans. A TED-style event like this is a combination of talks, TED videos and dialogue. Please come ready to explore ideas, challenge thinking and possibly even change your mind.

TEDxRegina's Audience Application Process

We have established a deadline: Wednesday, April 25^th at noon, local Regina time. If you’re interested in attending TEDxRegina, I highly recommend you submit an application by then. After the deadline, our audience selection cmmittee is going to identify all applicants that have expressed a passion for something and put them in a random draw for our limited number of seats. Shortly after, we’ll invite those successful applicants to register for our May 16^th event. If you’ve been selected, we’ll let you know by Friday April 27^th at the latest.

When we do make that invitation, we’ll be holding some seats in reserve. We have to make sure we can accommodate speakers, sponsors and volunteers (all who contribute to our head count). If we can’t invite you this week, we may be able to do a second round of invitations as we get closer to the date.

If you haven’t applied yet, we hope you’ll let us know you want to attend. If you’re reading this and it’s after the deadline, you may not be too late. Please submit an application to be included in any later invitation rounds we’re able to do.

We have had a wonderful response to TEDxRegina. I can tell you that the planning committee is feeling very privileged to get to bring a TEDx event to you. There are clearly many passionate TED fans in the Queen City.

We have been overwhelmed - in a good way and in a "we can't keep up" way. Which is also good, except for when we don't personally get back to all those that have shared interest or a desire to help.

If you have submitted an application to attend, speak or have told us you would like to volunteer, we heard you. We've been focused on coordinating speakers and following up with those that can help us deliver the inaugural TEDxRegina event. We're intent on making sure the day is a great experience and we're in the homestretch on those pieces. We will get back to you soon.

The TEDx model keeps our event small. We're limited to 100 people in the audience. We're limited to one day of talks. This means we can't accommodate all the wonderful speaker and audience submissions we've received. In the spirit of TED, we are focusing on diversity, inclusion and presenting and examining ideas.

Welcome! You’ve found a group of passionate TED fans that are excited to find and share ideas worth spreading here in Regina. You want to know some details. Here’s what’s confirmed so far – TEDxRegina will be be at the ShuBox Theatre on the University of Regina on Wednesday, May 16th.

We’re still discussing speakers and we want your input. Please email us at hello@tedxregina.com if you have an idea worth spreading or wish to suggest a speaker.

In terms of audience, we expect more demand for TEDxRegina than we will have space to hold.
